Little Shmoo's Top Five Countdown #5

Welcome to the Little Shmoo's Top Five Countdown. Only six lunch days left until school is out, and I thought it would be fun to revisit shmoo's very favorite lunches. This weekend I asked him which lunches he thought were the very best and wrote them down as he said them, with the first one coming in at Number One.

We'll start the list with Number 5: flautas. I first packed these fried corn tortillas filled with beans on December 8th, and then again (with recipe!) on March 16th. Both times they were an enormous success, with repeated requests for more flautas from shmoo and his dad at dinnertime.

Along with flautas and a small container of salsa I packed a pear, blanched broccoli, and half a Thinkorganic! Cherry Nut bar.

Verdict: Only broccoli stems were left in the lunch box. 5 stars for Number 5.

aw, I'm sad that it's so close to the end! I just loved seeing what goes into these yummy lunches every day!

What are your plans for the summer, Jennifer?

Thanks Jennifer for the daily inspiration. I hope we'll still have vegan lunch box over the summer, and to Little Shmoo, I wish tons of summer fun!

One more week of school! How exciting for everyone! Have a great summer Shmoo!!

I sure will miss the daily lunches! I am sure you could use a little refresher thuogh! Plus it leaves you with more time to write the book! ;-)

Oh, I KNEW that it was close to the end of the school year....I'm so sad. I would LOVE to see what you and Shmoo cook together throughout the summer. Don't know if you cook together on a daily basis or not, but would love to see a summer "cooking with kids" type series :)

I'm looking forward to seeing the count up to Shmoo's #1 lunch! We'll be having his #5 choice tomorrow for our lunch :)

Hi, this doesnt apply to this particular lunchbox but I was wondering if you could point me in a direction where I could possibly find Tuno. I am becoming desperate! I've searched several natural food stores in NYC and searched online extensively but can't find anything!!! Are there any online stores you know of that sell soy meat products and possibly Tuno. Thanks!!!

Ah, si, flautas! Que bonitas! :-) Those look scrumptious.

Can't wait to see what #1 is!

And what in the world will I do without my daily VLB fix?? The long weekend alone was torture!

Only one more week is too soon! (And not just because I'm still in school for another three weeks.) This is my favorite website. To echo the other posts, assuming Shmoo doesn't need a packed lunch each day, I will miss this over the summer and, yes, the long weekend was hard! I'm curious to see what Shmoo's no. 1 pick is!

Ahhhh...sooo jealous...

We still have 16 days!

Quick question: are the tortillas just regular ones as the store? If so, what brand?

Also, I remember you mentioning that shmoo will be going to a different school next year. Have you decided which school?

Great lunch and I like the countdown idea. I can't wait to see what #1 is!

I wonder if my favorite is the same as little shmoo's????? Oh the suspense! What a great idea! So is there any chance that little shmoo is going to go to summer school? Your not going to leave us hanging until next fall are you???????

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Can you maybe pack a LOT of picnics over the summer?

Jennifer - just a quick thanks from a long time lurker - I check out this site everyday!!!! I love seeing the creative lunches, the occasional recipes and I can't wait for your cookbook to come out!!! Going to miss Shmoo's lunches this summer for sure!!

P.S. For Lori - I saw Tuno at the Organic Market Health Food Store on 26th and 7th Ave (the one right up the block from the original Whole Foods on 24th and 7th). It was in their freezer section with the Worthington Products way at the bottom. I was so tempted, but so scared too...lol... (oh AND they carry Vegan Marshmallows!!!! well wortht the trip if you are not in the immediate area!!!)

Me too! (Lurky, that is.) I've got you on my Google Reader feed. I love seeing what you come up with!

Yes, what am I going to do this summer without my daily dose of schmoo food?! As I've mentioned before - your posts inspire me to eat less chicken & seafood & much more veggie......an overall healthier lifestyle. Thanks again! Your photos remind me of fun lunches my mom would make for me as a kid tucked with little home made notes...

>>Quick question: are the tortillas just regular ones as the store? If so, what brand?

Actually, I get them fresh at a local tortilla bakery. It's fun, you can watch them going down the assembly line. They are extra-small for flautas/taquitos, around 4 inches diameter. You might be able to find extra-small tortillas at the grocery store or make them with regular corn tortillas.

>>Also, I remember you mentioning that shmoo will be going to a different school next year. Have you decided which school?

Right now we're leaning heavily towards homeschooling, but we'll see how it goes over the summer.

>>Can you maybe pack a LOT of picnics over the summer?

I will definitely do a few picnics over the summer! In fact, I just got a spiffy new lunch container just for our summer picnics. :-)

i dont mean to be technical
but they are short in length
and made of corn tortillas

technically they are "taquitos"

flautas are longer
and made of flour tortillas

There was a big debate last time over whether these were flautas or taquitos. Some people consider the two terms interchangeable, some consider these to be flautas, others taquitos. The recipe I read describing how to make these (using corn tortillas) described them as flautas, saying taquitos were thinner, tighter, and had less filling. Oh well, either way they taste great!

Speaking as a person who grew up two miles from the Mexican border, I have to agree with eleanorgow. They're taquitos, but would be flautas with flour tortillas. Still, way cool!

Naxhi said...

mmmmmmmmmmmmm yummy, i love your cooking, you're like my vegan-cuisiniere role model hehe =) oh and, as a mexican girl, i must say that the difference between taquitos and flautas is the fryed corn tortilla. Fried ones are flautas, if it isn't fried it's more likely a taquito. Anyways, both of them taste reeeeeally good mmmmm delcius =D Greatings and congratulations for having a very nice blog !!

Sheena said...

A taquito can be fried!!So I must agree with the reluctant vegan these are more like taquitos than flautas because flautas ARE made with a flour tortilla but no matter what you call them, they look yummy!! And in case anyone was wondering, yes I am half mexican!!

ack! Only 6 lunches left!!! Now what will we do?

Homeschool is good, I was homeschool for as long as possible! For me that was til 4th grade, but only because my mom had to go to work. I LOVED IT!

lilymoonchild said...

But Flauta is a cooler name. So that wins right there, no?

lilymoonchild said...

Oh, and I, too, will be sad not to see new lunches every day. But since I only started viewing your blog in March, I figure I can go back over the archives, two a day, and that will get me through the summer! Whatever will we do if you homeschool?!?!?! I guess you have to consider the well-being of your child over the readers of your blog, but oh how I hope to see more beautiful lunches!

lizzie lou said...

oh no, there's no reason to pack a lunchbox for a homeschooled boy! i suppose schmoo's welfare should come before vegan lunch box, but STILL! my daughter, who's been homeschooled for middle school, is heading off to high school in the fall, and the thing she is most excited about is her new laptop lunch box (she's a huge fan of your blog and a near-vegan, just like her mom).

About the home school. You're in Washington, right? Check out www.connectionsacademy.com . It's a virtual school. They send you all the books and curriculum. You have contact with a teacher every two weeks. They still have field trips, etc. We did it this year and LOVED it. We are already signed up for next year to continue.

Back on topic. I have really enjoyed your little project here. I check it daily. You have helped show me how easy it is to be vegan and helped in the final push to go vegan as well as my whole family!

Thanks and YOU ROCK!

raising_kahne said...

That's awesome that you are possibly going to homeschool Shmoo! Im homeschooled, and I enjoy it very much. What are we Vegan Lunchbox junkies going to do without the daily updates from now on?? : )

Fastveggie said...

♫Taquito, flautas! ♪♫ Toe-mae-toe, tah-mah-toe! Let's just call it yummy :-)

You have inspired me to not only eat more vegan food--I'm lacto-ovo with vegan tendencies ;-) but to pack healthier, thoughtful lunches. I have now invested in a few boxes (laptop lunch, a couple traditional bento boxes, and some vintage lunch boxes). Yikes, maybe I shoulda stuck to the same lunchbox every day model that works so well for you.

I can't wait to see the top four!

Top 5 countdown is a great idea. These "Flutes" as we call them, are very popular in my house also. I soften my tortillas in the microwave - wrapped in a damp paper towel in piles of five.

KaiVegan said...

Hey, you're considering homeschooling! That's great and if you decide that's what you're going to do, I'm sure little Shmoo would really enjoy it, and you'd be doing so many fun stuff together.

This top 5 is really a cool idea! And a vegan homeschool blog won't be too bad:)

I am sad that it is almost the end of the school year. I have really enjoyed seeing what your son takes for lunch. It gives me so many wonderful ideas for my son's lunch. Thank you for all of your wonderful posts. Hopefully we will be getting re-runs during the summer.

I'm so excited you're thinking of homeschooling! I was a homeschooler my last year of high school, and I learned way more and had much more fun. Homeschooling made me actually interested in learning, which most school kids just aren't. Even though I've now graduated college I'm always still teaching myself "classes" -- astronomy, literature, botany, anything else I'm interested in! I only wish I'd been homeschooled my whole life instead of wasting time in school.

I hope you decide to homeschool Shmoo, although if you do I will definitely miss your lunch boxes!

DDawnC said...

Wow. I will reserve my crying jag until you actually confirm the impending death of VLB, but my lip will be trembling with fear in the meantime.

I'll also keep my views on homeschool to myself, as I'm sure you've got PLENTY of input (welcome and unwelcome) on that subject.

My one actual comment is: hooray for the top 5 countdown! :) Thank you for having that great idea; it's an upbeat way to end the school year for all your cyberfans.

Oh- one other thing. I just got back from a trip to Germany and the Netherlands, where I entered an "English store" (like American made, but English stuff) and bought Vegemite for the very first time! :) It was cheaper than the marmite, strangely. I've only tasted a bit on my finger so far, but I think I will like it. Thanks so much for giving me the idea to try it!
