I found them at Whole Foods and have been merrily using them for months--loved them! Then my husband questioned whether they were indeed vegan. So I inquired with the company that makes them and found out that, indeed, they are NOT VEGAN.
One nice alternative I have found is VEGETABLE SOURCED CELLOPHANE BAGS. They are also highly biodegradable. I get them from Mountain Rose Herbs.
Please do double-check your paraffin information source too--I have seen it listed as "safe" on some vegetarian sites too, but a thorough evaluation of its source reveals that almost all paraffin is from animals.
Thanks for all the useful information, you have a great site.teresahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07792730564925784221noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16132334.post-84199188509004619762008-05-08T12:10:00.000-07:002008-05-08T12:10:00.000-07:00Hmmm, I must differ. Tallow is animal fat, but paraffin is made from petroleum, wood, coal, or shale oil. In fact, paraffin is listed as a vegan alternative to tallow in some vegan product lists.Jennifershmoohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08663322884550580226noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16132334.post-47190651290075460982008-05-08T12:00:00.000-07:002008-05-08T12:00:00.000-07:00The Natural Waxed Paper Bags are NOT VEGAN. It's used to coat Fabric for cloth diapers (I made my own and bought loads of this stuff and still have some left). No plastic smell at all. Will make and post back. Another question, about the waxed paper bags, can I put wet stuff in them? I cut up my dd's oranges and we re-use our plastic baggies until we can't use them anymore. Was wondering if these would work. Thanks! Just found your blog and love it! DD goes through 2 insulated lunch bags a year, how does she tear them up? I still felt funny about it when the mat smelled so strongly of off-gassing plastic when we got it.

I agree, there is probably a way to make these without plastic. I've been pondering that idea, too. The fabric would have to be dense enough to keep the sandwich from drying out. I'm confused about this b/c it looks like the wrap n' mat people's intention is conservation (though I'm sure it's heaps better than throwaway plastic baggies!) - I wonder if there'd be a way to make a cloth one - maybe a heaavy type cloth that won't bleed through if you're mustard leaks over (if you had a few, you could just throw them in the wash every week)- then you wouldn't have to worry about plastics and food safety, either. Hm... maybe I'll go make myself some (out of drop cloth?) - and thanks for your posts, Jennifer - I really look forward to them!emilyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03896412855628711043noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16132334.post-2631403208026317862007-04-17T20:01:00.000-07:002007-04-17T20:01:00.000-07:00Okay, now I have to go to my WF and see if I can g...Okay, now I have to go to my WF and see if I can get some of that yummy-sounding roast. I have a tendency to put way too much lettuce and accessories into my sandwich and by the time lunch comes around it would always be a mess, or the different sized bread wouldn't always fit in the tupperware container I used to use. The Wrap-N-Mat allows me to wrap the sandwich tight so when I am ready to eat it, it doesn't even fall apart.
