Hot Dog

The shmoo is back at school and good as new! Here's his request for today: an enormous veggie hot dog on a whole wheat bun. I cut it in half to fit it in the lunch box, and included a small container of ketchup, a lite pear fruit cup, some grape tomatoes, and a few kettle chips as a treat. A "pickle" joke card is on the side. "Mmm, wouldn't a real pickle taste good, too?" I asked. Shmoo is feeling anti-pickles at the moment.
Verdict: About half the bun was deemed "crust" and left uneaten. Oh, those crusts! 3 stars.

Yummers!! Do you have any tips you can give a Momma to get her soon to be 6 year old to try and actually eat some veggies?? thanks again for the lunchie inspiration!

Hi Jennifer!
I don't know what it is about the crusts either. I cut them off and my 4 year old still manages to bite around the smallest remnants of any remaining crusts. Crusts and green leafies... groan!

I want to let you know that I just found this website looking for vegan lunches for work. You are awesome! This is a brilliant idea and I hope your son appreciates how freakin' cool his mum is!

How did this work in a lunchbox? Did it stay semi-warm or does Shmoo eat it cold?

my 2 year old daughter goes into the fridge to eat our grape tomatoes all the time, they are her favourite! i think she learned how to open the fridge door just to get at those little tomatoes LOL. gotta watch her or she'll gobble down the whole container!

I was also wondering how you were able to keep the food warm or if Shmoo will eat the veggie dog at room temperature? I am seriously considering purchasing one of these laptop lunch boxes for my four-year-old, she could take it with her to preschool. I just found your web site and love it! I was just curious about the temperature of the food. Thank you! I am also impressed that Shmoo eats such a great variety of food.

Hi Jennifer, I'm so envious of your son's lunches! They look delicious. I have a question about the Laptop Lunch system. Are the pieces dishwasher safe? I'm considering ordering one for myself, and while this isn't a must, it would be nice to know. Thanks!

Glad he is feeling better! What kind of hot dogs do you use again? Tofu pups? I can't remember!

Also, what kind of kettle chips?

These are Yves brand. We got a lot of comments on tofu dogs back in September when I made him "pups in blankets". I think the consensus was Yves tofu dogs are the best for texture.

The kettle chips are plain lightly salted Kettle brand -- my husband's favorite.

As far as temperature, I cooked the hot dog in the morning, wrapped it in foil and sealed it in the insulated carrier. By lunch time it wasn't hot anymore, more like warm. I'm finding that kids don't really seem to mind that things aren't piping hot. I am looking forward to next year, though, when it looks like his classroom might have a microwave!!

Hi, dreena -- exactly! Even when I cut the crusts off he still finds something to designate as crust. lol!

Hi, nicole! I'll post a helpful link on eating veggies on Wednesday, so stay tuned...

Hi and thanks for a fantastic blog I love looking at. I just wanted to let you know that the Yves hot dogs I looked at in the store contain "butter flavor" and say they contain dairy ingredients. There may very well be several varieties by that company, but thought I'd give everyone the heads up for those whom it might bother.

Mark -- yes, there are several varieties of Yves veggie dogs. One of them (their so-called "Good Dog") is no longer vegan (because of the butter flavor, which they added about a year ago for reasons beyond my comprehension). However, all of the others are still vegan.

Hi,

Where do you ge your pickle jokes from?
Please tell?!

Thanks,

TO THE YVES QUESTION,

The Yves that is most like regular dogs, is the "Grilling" brand. This is NOT a vegan product, however if you pan-fry it with cooking spray it is the closest we've found.

Have fun.
