Today was another noon release day. Little shmoo & I went out for avocado and veggie sushi at Subs 'N' Jean (great name for a sushi bar, isn't it?). Then we walked across the street to Ariel Gourmet and bought some Swedish Ginger Thins for dessert. Yum!
Hey, my friend Bohemian Mama sent me a link to these great Lunch Labels at the Martha Stewart Living website. You can print out stickers and labels to decorate lunch bags or seal them closed (although I personally would recommend using an insulated lunch case instead of paper). Even better, print out the magnetic lunch chart and a list of your favorite lunch items and plan out menus for the week. If I were using the chart I would probably change the clipart, taking out the pretzel or cupcake and adding a vegetable. Enjoy!

Little schmoo sure does have a lot of noon release days. I don't recall there being very many when I was his age, but my memory of that time is a little fuzzy given that it was 12-13 years ago.
I look forward to reading this site everyday! I don't know what I'll do when summer rolls around. Maybe by then I'll be making my own vegan lunches. ;)

I would have never guessed that those Swedish cookies they sell at IKEA were vegan! ::excited!::
I LOVE your website!! I am a vegetarian but hope to turn vegan soon. I tell EVERYONE I know to check out this site, thanx for the inspiration...your recipes looks so yummy! yes, those swedish ginger thins are great! i got some when i was in seattle visiting my mom. a lot of foods are vegan that you wouldn't think would be. anything that looks tastey i read the label. often, they have milk or something but every once in a while i score a vegan treat!

I had to comment and say that I love those ginger thins and have been known to eat a whole box when not paying attention. I really like them because they're made with wheat flour. :)

I just got the Laptop Lunch box for my daughter after seeing it on your website. The trial run will probably be tomorrow (she's home sick today). My question is, when you pack the sandwich and snack mixes and other items in the lid-less containers, do they really not fall out or make a mess on the way to school? I feel like I should stretch a piece of plastic wrap or wax paper over the top, but that kind of defeats the purpose. Can you reassure me that everything won't fall out or become combined by lunch time? Thanks! I love your website (so does my daughter).

I love this blog and check it everyday! Just a note, though -- those ginger thins (and other flavors) are PACKED with trans fat (aka partially hydrogenated oils). Nutritionally speaking, you'd be better off even eating butter (yikes!). Just because something is vegan doesn't mean it can't put a serious hurting on your blood lipids.
I love this idea! It's so great. Especially since I too am a vegan stay at home mom with a child in the first grade. It's very hard to come up with new and exciting lunch ideas for him. Especially so he doesn't feel like he's missing out on anything. Thanks for the great ideas!! I will definately be bookmarking this blog!
About Ginger Thins -- the traditional Swedish recipe can easily be made vegan (I did it -- just use trans fat free vegan margarine instead of butter. There are no eggs.). Google "Pepparkakor."
Hi, Martha -- You'll notice when you put the lid down that those containers fit quite tightly in there. Sandwiches and big things stay put just fine. If I'm packing something tiny like peas I cover them with a bit of plastic for a little extra insurance (which, I do agree, defeats the purpose -- I really wish they would make a small container with a lid!). And of course, I only put liquidy things like applesauce in the large container with a lid. But really, things stay put just fine. Give it a go! :-)

This girl I know is vegan. Her skin is pale as heck, her eyes are deep and she always has these dark bags underneath them.
Not to mention she never has the strenght to do anything.
We're omnivores - our stomach Acid pH is intended for meat! We don't have 12 sets of molars in our mouth, people. Wake up.
wow, raf, you've opened my eyes with your intelligent arguments and made me realize that the last 10 years i've spent vegetarian have been a total waste of time. not.
i was reading the above comment about it being stupid to be vegan..and although i am not vegan myself..i feel that we should not criticize the lifestyles of others..we should all make choices about nutrition that we feel are right for our bodies
Isn't it interesting that someone can cite one vegan who might not be healthy as proof that veganism is dumb?!? I know LOTS of unhealthy omnivores with bags under their eyes who never have any strength ...
I'm glad there are blogs such as this one that help strengthen the case for veganism by constantly setting such a fantastic example! Keep up the great work!

There is no reason to come to this site and mock someone's lifestyle.
These days with electronics mesaging, it is so easy to post an inflammatory message and then run away. However people with feelings are still reading and interpreting your electronic message.
Jennifer is providing a great example of excellent vegan nutrition. It sounds to me that your vegan friend may have other things going on healhwise or not making the right food choices.
And let's not forget that there are omnivores in poor health as well.

Check out the cookies & cream Clif bars for a snack. They are pretty filling though, I don't know if a first grader could finish one.

omg, your post reminded me of when i was a kid, i had a flash back to when i was in grade school and my dad put my lunch in insulated paper bags. :)
Hehe. I'm really pale, and have a touch of dark circles under my eyes. And I'm vegan. Funny thing was--I looked exactly the same BEFORE, when I was omni. I don't think these are necessarily signs of a severe health defect. I think we all know by now that a healthy tan isn't so healthy. I lead a pretty active life, and if anything, feel like I have more energy since going vegan. Just thought I'd say that, so maybe if you want to make generatlizations based on one case you could use mine instead :) (Oh, and I know an omni who used to eat a ton of meat whose spleen ruptured; he is now trying to cut back a bit.)

Oh my goodness, I'm soooo impressed!!! You rock, Mama! I am married w/ 3 kids and haven't followed a vegetarian diet since marriage, but your lunches are so creative and delicious looking that you have inspired me to look that way again!
