It's Crazy Kung Fu Shmoo's Summer Clearance Blow Out SALE!

UPDATE: Please note that this sale expired August 1st.

That's right! We're crazy, crazy, crazy for slashing prices this low -- must be the heat! Visit VeganLunchBox.com to take advantage of my Summer Clearance Blow Out Sale: from now until August 1st buy TWO COPIES FOR $30.00! You heard right: two copies of Vegan Lunch Box for just $30.00! *

Woo, I always wanted to be a used car salesman. Anyway, I thought perhaps a juicy sale might encourage people to buy copies now for back-to-school time, so I don't get slammed in late August. And perhaps it will make up a bit for my shameful lack of posts.

Things have been quiet around here lately, I know. Please don't expect too much of me this summer; a lot has been happening in my life that doesn't fit in a lunch box! I hope everyone is out there enjoying some vacations and summer fun, like we are.

Someone mentioned hoping I would post some summer travel ideas and recipes. Please don't forget to look through the archive of recipes and blog posts from last summer for a collection of picnic, road trip, and camping ideas.

*Every good sale has to have fine print, so here's mine: Price includes free shipping via USPS Media Mail. This deal is for US orders only. For International and Priority shipping, please select the Priority and International order button and order at the regular price of $22.95 plus $5.00 shipping. To purchase just one copy, use the regular $22.95 order button.

What a great deal! I placed my order this morning--one copy for me, and one to share with a friend!

DOH! Murphy's Law strikes again. I JUST ordered my copy last week. LOL. Oh well. One is more than worth $30 anyway!

Tropikiwi said...

Sigh so us poor internationals miss out.
Why can't we get two for $30 plus the $5 shipping fee?

Jennifershmoo said...

Blame the US Postal Service. They raised their international rates recently by quite a bit. I'm now paying $11.00 each to ship books internationally ($9.00 to Canada). I chose not to raise the price on the website this summer even though I am having to pay more, so you're getting a deal, too!

Schmoo: You are a great martial artist. So stinkin' cute too!

Darn it!
I ordered mine a week or so ago.
Isn't that always the way?

Heard this today on WNYC:

http://www.wnyc.org/shows/bl/episodes/2007/06/20#segment80828

The segment is called "Food Fight" and features a debate between Vegan/dietitian Vesanto Melina and Nina Planck who wrote the op-ed piece about the "impossibility" of raising healthy vegan children.

Of course, there was no resolution, but it's worth a listen.

I don't blame you for not posting, everyone's busy this summer, even me!

Just wanted to say that I ordered your book and love it - couldn't wait to make some of the recipes. I don't have children, but that doesn't mean I don't love delicious and attractive looking food, so thank you for that. Enjoy your summer and post when you can. P.S. Schmoo is adorable and looks the picture of good health to my untrained eye. ;)

Oh, now that is an adorable photo. So clever, too! =)
Ah, time to order a book!

I'm not even Vegan and I ordered them! I am gluten-free, though, so I love your ideas for cool lunchbox ideas. Thank you so much for being so darn creative!

I would love to partake in this sale, but I want to pay via personal check. Do you do that? I'm not a credit card person.

I'm just over in Olympia, and have been reading your site since the begining. :)

Sure, you can mail a check payable to:

Thanks! :-)

I got mine in the mail Monday. I am so happy! I have been reading the blog for a long time. You inspired me to buy the Eat To Live book and my family is eating so much healthier now. My son (he's 3) even eats lettuce, sometimes. I am beyond words about that. I can't wait to start making some of the meals in the cookbook.

I have been reading your site for the last few years (I have read every post!) and love your creative and fun presentation, recipes, and photos.

My spouse and I have very recently converted to a vegan diet. What finally provided the reasoning for this decision was a certain book called "The China Study" by T. Colin Campbell. This is a great book for adamant meat-eaters with convincing health information that is personally relevant to each and every person. The book also lead me to Dr. McDougall's Health & Medical Center (with a free vegan diet program on the website) and The Food Studies Institute, which has developed and implemented elementary school nutrition curriculums based on a vegan diet. It is great to see medical professionals advocating for and educating the public on the healthiest diet in the world- veganism!

Just thought I would pass on these resources to you from a (now) fellow vegan in the hopes of further spreading the awareness and appreciation of the vegan lifestyle!

hey. i really need you to help me! :)
i loved this site! i got so many new ideas and bought tons of yummy things. and then i also bought the lunchbox. but my problem is, when i put something like fruit in it, it gets all soggy during the day, or if i cook something like potato beetles, they get soggy too. everything i put in the lunchbox gets yucky, and even my ginger snaps will be affected by the moisture and they wont be good anymore either. how do you keep shmmos lunches good through the day?

boozsha said...

p.s. i will bee looking back frequently for an answer, because i really need to know soon because school starts really soon. :D

Jennifershmoo said...

Hi, Boozsha -- I'm not sure how you are packing your lunch box, but here are a few thoughts:

Are you sealing your containers when there are "wet" foods that could run over? The back container has a lid; other containers can be covered by plastic wrap held on with a rubber band, or with foil.

Are you packing your lunch box in an insulated case with an ice pack? This is essential and keeps your foods fresh and safe until lunch time.

Are you packing things while they are too warm? Hot foods will sweat too much and will make the foods around them too warm. Pack everything cold with an ice pack. (Yes, shmoo eats his potato beetles and cooked veggies cold!) Pack hot foods like soups and stews in an insulated food jar or thermos.

Finally, you could also cover containers with folded paper towels and then with plastic wrap if moisture is still a problem for you.

Hope that helps!

I like the looks of that bento box. What about the plastic? How do you know that the plastic tiffin and the plastic bento box won't cause harm? Eliminating toxic plastics is one of my concerns right now. Thanks for any help you can offer!

Jennifer, can you email me about a project at eric@ananimalfriendlylife.com? Thanks! Eric

This really doesn't have anything to do with your entry, but I thought you would like looking at this cool food art (I don't think it's vegan, but it sure is inspirational from a design standpoint):

Jennifer,
Do you know of any recipes for vegan margerine? I love earth balance, but tonight --I am in shock--I am OUT! I have always wondered if I could make my own and save money and packaging. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Deirdre

Jennifershmoo said...

Gee, I've never thought about it! I suppose you could combine palm oil or some other vegetable fat that is solid at room temperature with some liquid oil like canola until you get a consistency you like, then add some vegan butter flavor, like this one:

http://www.naturesflavors.com/product_info.php/cPath/95/products_id/4522

Natural yellow food coloring could be added for color.

It seems like it would be easier to just run to the store, though!! LOL

Actually now that I'm thinking about it, a recipe for homemade margarine might be great for those with soy allergies, who can't use Earth Balance. Let me know if you come up with one!

Um.. so completely off-topic, but Jennifershmoo, where do you get your ketchup/catsup? (Please say it's not Heinz.) I've noticed in several of your old posts that you serve ketchup/catsup and I know How It All Began has a good ketchup recipe, but if there is a healthy(ish) ready-made ketchup/catsup out there that would be so much easier on me. Any ideas?

Jennifershmoo said...

Hi, Mrs. Cummings -- I use Westbrae:

http://www.westbrae.com/products/condiments.php

I buy the fruit-sweetened kind for shmoo and the unsweetened kind for me (I love to add it to hummus/bean spreads and vegetable dishes.)

deirdre said...

Jennifer,
I am hot at work on this homemade margerine thing... will keep you informed.
--In the meantime --I was wondering if anyone out there is aware of frozen vegan cookie dough in a "tube" that you would cut into individual sized cookies then cook. I see a niche market developing here...Do you think anyone would go for this if it were healthy or not so healthy?
