Strange Timing

How odd that I just happened to pack Pringles potato chips for the very first time in my latest lunch box post. It turns out that the creator of the Pringles can just died and was buried in a Pringles can.

Although my Minis came in a bag instead of a can, I must still pause to raise an excessively salty, fatty crisp in memory of Fredric J. Baur, inventor of the Pringles can. Thank you, sir. Those cans have turned out to be quite useful. In my Wilton cake decorating class we learned that a Pringles can is the best thing for holding a pastry bag open as you fill it with frosting. They also make a nifty wall organizer, vase, windmill, or even an antenna. And I guess Mr. Baur found one final use for them himself.

So long, Mr. Baur, and thanks for all the cans!

P.S. Speaking of Pringles, have you noticed there are like 5 million flavors on the market now? Wasn't one enough?

Surely as a vegan you shouldn't be buying Pringles? They're made by Procter & Gamble, who do some particularly horrific and cruel animal testing.

I could never buy any Pringles other than the Original Red can----some of those flavors seem very strange indeed.

I love that he was buried in a can---I'm assuming you mean he was cremated, or did they make a huge, coffin-sized can for his body?

I love Pringles, especially the jalapeno ones!

Interesting!! Haha yes, one flavor of Pringles was MORE than enough ;0)

Are you kidding? These things are reconstituted dried potatoes fried in oil and heavily salted. NO ONE should be buying Pringles.

What can I say? I don't mind my shmoo eating junk food occasionally, and if I were to trace every foodstuff back to its megacorp daddy, we wouldn't be able to eat anything from the store.

Oh, man. Paprika Pringles (which you can apparently only get in Europe, so when I go, I bring back a suitcase full of those, Starburst and Skittles) are really, really awesome. But, of course, they're not good.

In elementary school, we made telescopes out of Pringles cans. Cut a piece of black construction paper into a circle to fit into the lid. Poke the paper with lots of little holes. You can even make constellations, I'm sure. Put the paper in the lid, put the lid on the can. Poke a hole in the bottom of the can and look through the hole as you hold the lid side up towards the light. STARS! lol

RIP can creator. I think it's neat that he wanted to be buried in his creation.

I used to eat pringles all the time in highschool. I would take that spray can cheese and make little pringles chipwiches. Not very healthy. I grew up a little and realized maybe not the smartest thing to do.

oh lord, I have a weakness for pringles. they are crack.

Proctor and Gamble is a bit different though. They are actually quite easy to avoid in the long run and well worth it as a vegan.

They do some of the most horrific things I have ever seen done to dogs and cats (and other animals) and I am always shocked when I find out vegetarians (or anyone really) buys anything from Proctor and Gamble.

Ok I swear I hadn't realized how bitter I have become in my quest to make a difference - but reading the post I just couldn't help but think not-so-kind things about the inventor of the can.

So you may be sensible enough to re-use the can, but I doubt that the average Joe will think twice about just chucking it out. And therefore not spend the fraction of a second thinking about all the resources it has taken to create this thing, let alone how much energy will have to go into recycling it, seeing that it's a mixture of metal, plastic and cardboard.

Yeah, I knew it would sound lame, but I just had to get it off my chest. I just don't think that the product "deserves" this kind of packaging. I will get off my soapbox now, I promise ;)
