PlanetBox!

How cool is this?? I just found out about PlanetBox, a stainless steel lunch box for kids, and I'm so excited I just had to break my bloggy silence and post something about it! Finally, it looks like someone's getting it just right!

If I had to design a lunch box, this is what I would create -- it's got the bento-style compartments I love so much in the Laptop Lunch System, but in food-safe, eco-friendly stainless steel, and without so many separate containers to keep track of. One section is the perfect size for a sandwich or bagel, it's got lidded containers for messier items, and the portion sizes look perfect for kids and maybe even some adults (not me, though -- I gotta stick with To Go Ware for my big, big salads!)

If you visit their website, watch the video and note the spiffy magnets for decorating, and how the carrying case includes outside compartments for a water bottle and snack (I would have loved a separate place for a snack when my son was in first grade and had snack and lunchtime).

The potential drawbacks I see are dings and dents in the stainless steel(remind your kids to keep it in the carrying case), potential leaks around the edges (not sure how fruits like melon will keep from leaking into the other sections), and the considerable cost. If anyone wants to get one and try it out, let us know how it goes!

We are a whole family of PlanetBoxers!! It does have some down sides (all things do), but overall, this has been a great addition to our home-lunch-on-the-go lifestyle! And, so long as I don't lose it, its stainless steal construction will probably outlive me! :o) Glad you're posting again!

  4. We have several friends with these, but it doesn't hold enough food for my 11 year old 6th grader. I've thought about buying one for my younger kids, but our to-go ware is working, but I love the sections!

  5. We have one in its third year of use and it doesn't have any dents in it yet. They're very durable. I think the carrying case will probably need to be replaced in another year or two because the edges are getting worn on the inside. I love that I can just open them up and lay them on the top rack of the dishwasher over the cups and things, too.

Love the look of the box, and it may work for an adult who is trying not to eat everything in sight, like me!

I went on their website and yes, they are a bit pricey but think how long they will last and how much money adults can save by not eating out at lunchtime!
    I think it's well designed.

The leaking from one compartment to another is mybiggest worry. We have that issue with our laptop Lunchbox right now. We like to pack vegetables and fruits and they make a mess if they aren't all in lidded containers.

If this box prevents that, I'd buy it in a heartbeat!

  16. I just got a new (to join the other nutty lunch things I have...I'm lunch container obsessed...) sectioned lunch box for my birthday - it's called "LunchBots" http://lunchbots.com/

And now I'm cleaning leaked tuna and vinegar from the bottom of my backpack. I shouldn't have picked such a smelly combination for my first run with a new lunch tin. Serves me right.
They maybe plastic, but my Leaflet Tight (no website, just lookup on Amazon) wouldn't do that to me. Also, the cheap little double-decker boxes I got from the local Asian store hasn't either.

I'd really like to find a good steel one, but they are just so inconvenient. Can't put them in the microwave and they leak like crazy!

  22. It looks very duriable! I was wondering if you have any suggestions for cold vegan finger food for lunches. My husband and I and our three kids changed to a vegan diet about 2 and a half years ago. He has been taking PB sandwiches almost every day and is tired of it. He eats while he works though so it has to be finger food and he doesn't like beans or any soy. Any ideas? I can't seem to find anything more creative! ceanne.kosel at gmail dot com

  27. I have a new vegan soup recipe ebook I was wondering if you'd like a copy of. It's called Comfort Soups To Keep You Warm and I think you'd like them since you're into soups and stews for your lunch boxes. I don't know how to contact you, but you can always email me.

  29. So cool! It would be perfect for my kids, so I wouldn't need to use all those little boxes like in here
    http://alessandrazecchini.blogspot.co.nz/2012/06/vegan-school-lunch-boxes-eat-your.html.

But I wonder if it would be too big for their school bag!

  33. That looks like the perfect lunch box! Might just have to look into buying 2! One for my daughter, and one for me :P

  34. I take mine to work all the time and it always gets positive comments. For VeganLinda who said it doesn't hold enough for her 6th grader, Planetbox has a larger one now that holds more -- essentially it's deeper.

I'm not worried about dings -- you'd have to drop it onto asphalt from pretty high up to dent it.
