Vegan ham slices rolled up with vegan cream cheese (in the picture it looks like only two, but there are five stacked in there), a pumpkin carob chip muffin, watermelon and cantaloupe balls with organic red grapes, and sweet canned corn.
Verdict: Little shmoo had a lot of fun scooping out melon balls and rolling up deli slices this morning. He cleaned it up today, too, eating everything but a bite of corn. 4 stars.
That's awesome that he got to help. That should make things taste even better to him.
ReplyDeleteI used to eat the omni version of your roll ups when I was a kid and loved them. I'll have to keep this in mind for when my toddler is older.
ooh, can you post the recipe for the pumpkin carob chip muffin? that's two of my favorite foods combined!
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of scoop do you use for all the little fruit balls? those are so cute! Man, I love this blog :)
ReplyDeleteJennifer I am so jealous of your kids' appetite and sense of gastro-adventure. When my non-vegan child was in preschool, I fixed him gorgeous (not as gorgeous as yours) well-rounded lunches packed with nutrition and imagination.
ReplyDeleteOne day, the teacher took me aside and said "He just picks at his lunches. You should really just pack a pb&j." So I did. Sigh.....
Your son is a lucky boy! Thanks for posting all of this - it gives me (and many others, I'm sure) great ideas! As a preschool/kindergarten Montessori teacher I pack lunches myself and sit with the students. I wish all of the kids had great lunches like this (and me, too)! I will check back regularly!
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of vegan ham slices do you use? I've tried some of the Yves ones, but they were only okay. Any ideas?
ReplyDeleteHi, molly! I use a melon baller; you can pick one up at a cooking supply store or sometimes at the grocery store. They are a lot of fun!
ReplyDeleteHi, anonymous with the pb&j pre-schooler! Yes, I know we are so lucky to have such a "good eater" as they say. He really will try anything once and loves so many things I hated as a child. Did your pre-schooler become more adventurous as he got older?
And hi, shelly! We use Yves deli slices. I honestly don't like any of them, but Little shmoo really digs all the fake meats. I don't think he remembers what the real ones taste like, so he doesn't have anything to compare them with. He really wants to try "tuno", which scares me. LOL!
the tofurkey slices are pretty good. i think they taste the best out of the ones i've tried so far.
ReplyDeleteHey - what a great site! I am a vegan mum, and edit a magazine (Realfood) and would like to ask you to write for the next one! If so, email me at mary@realfood.org.uk - the websites I manage include www.veganbuddies.org.uk and www.realfood.org.uk (so you can check me out before writing, in case I am a weirdo!)
ReplyDeleteI love the effort you have gone to with these lunches. I am bound to do an article some time about vegan lunches for kids, so am looking forward to pointing people this way. Thanks!
Mary
I was sent a link to your website and am so glad. Thanks for showing these lunches - they're inspirational. Although my kids aren't vegan, they are dairy allergic (and one nuts/peanuts). Trying to come up with a lot of varied ideas for the lunch box is challenging. The presentation is gorgeous as well.
ReplyDeleteYou do realise you have created something of a cult blog.
ReplyDeleteI love checking what the lunch of the day is.
Thanks for a great site!!!
Ditto what Kristy said! LOL. What kind of "Cream Cheese" do you use?
ReplyDeleteTuno is good on occasion for hot 'creamed tuno on toast'. It's okay for a Tuno salad sandwhich too, but I really prefer a home made tempeh 'tuna' salad, it's better than anything that comes in a can. Great site!!
ReplyDeleteWow.. I am so impressed with your school lunches!!! Mine are so much more boring!! But we are not vegans either so I grab quick wrapped things. I also have 5 children, 2 in school so far. WOW. I just have to say WOW. lol Way to go, MOM!!
ReplyDeleteAnd again, WOW. ;) I'm going to have to get on the ball and feed my kidlets better school lunches. You've inspired me!!
ReplyDeleteLOL! Wow, a cult blog?! I always wanted my own cult!
ReplyDeleteWe use Tofutti Better than Cream Cheese; it's the only one available here, and we like it. Someday I may try making my own...
Wow, I LOVE this website! I envy your kid who gets to eat all this delicious looking healthy food. Yum!
ReplyDeletegood posting.
