Two mini-bagels with vegan cream cheese, an organic apple, and a Spongebobish bag of baby carrots with some mashed pinto beans mixed with Bragg's for dipping. Beverage: a raspberry Silk Alive! soy yogurt drink.
Verdict: I knew he would only finish half the bag of carrots, but I had to leave the carrots in the bag because hey, it's a cartoon character promoting a fresh vegetable! Hooray! I mean, I don't know if Little shmoo has ever actually seen "Spongebob Squarepants" (we don't have TV), but I'm supporting this 100%. Next I'd like to see Batman promoting kale...then maybe shmoo would eat it! 4 stars.
I don't have a TV either, there was no room for one in my dorm when I went to college. Wow, you get SO much more done without a television, and I don't even miss it. Should have gone TV-free years ago!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE that you don't have a tv. I'm way more addicted that I would like to admit, which stems from the fact that I use it as my "down time" and of course, over the years when you use tv to relax, it becomes the main source of entertainment, and you get attached to certain programs.. thereby never being able to wrench yourself away! aah, how much different life would be to have been raised without it.
ReplyDelete----
anyway...
I have those same little bags of baby carrots in my fridge :-) and and by the way, what is Bragg's?
Well, I must confess I just remembered there is a television we got for free downstairs in our basement. But it's not hooked up and we never use it. I go back and forth about getting a DVD player just to watch movies on it sometimes.
ReplyDelete"Bragg's Liquid Aminos" is made from soybeans and has a flavor similar to soy sauce, but a bit different. We buy it in a spray bottle, and Little shmoo loves to spritz it on his steamed veggies. You can pick it up at health food stores.
We've been TV-free for a couple years now. People always think I'm insane when I suggest that, no, we won't be purchasing a TV when we have the baby. My grandmother also doesn't understand how we ever "relax" at home. Perhaps this is because she has her TV on 12 hours a day.
ReplyDeleteNow I want bagels. :)
oh, ok, I didn't know it was just a soy sauce. Thanks for clearing that up. Well, I hope if I ever have children that I can raise them without a tv constantly on (I have to first ween myself off though.. but being at college, it's hard to do when all you want to do in between classes and work is lay down and watch cartoons.. or maybe that's just me). and I also of course hope to be able to make meals for those (maybe) future kids as wonderfully as you do.
ReplyDeleteWe have a television set but just for movies - no antennae or cable. I was also raised without television and I really appreciate that. I spent all my time reading, playing games, doing arts and crafts, and playing in our garden or at the park. I can't wait to see my own future children so involved with life.
ReplyDeleteand yet you all have computers and the internet...
ReplyDeleteSure, anonymous, then I can read things like the vegan lunch box, or the healthy landscapes pages at URI. I haven't seen any ads for MacDonalds either place :-)
ReplyDeleteif i am addicted to the tv, wouldn't it make sense for me to be addicted to the computer as well? haha.
ReplyDeletebut anonymous, I know what you're saying, you instigator, you...
Hi there! I love bagels...haven't done a vegan creamed cheese yet just have been avoiding it all together since I've made or am trying to make the switch. I am sure I would like it.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was in College Veggie Tales was just getting hot and I enjoyed watching those DVDs! And they're Veggies! Oh! But They have a christian message...I am not sure of your beliefs and don't want to offend you in anyway by suggesting them if that isn't something you are interested in. (*blushes* hopes I didn't offend you)
Anyhow,
I am off to blog hop! Have a great weekend!
Right on Ruby and Karen Anne... at least we can pick and choose (mostly) what is in front of our face on the internet, and not at all on the TV. Good for everyone without tv, but I do highly recommend hooking up a dvd player once a month or so to watch movies. At least that is at your discression. Also, Jennifer, do you put any citrus on your cut up fruits to keep them from going brown?!?
ReplyDeleteJust get a Tivo and you don't have to watch anything you don't want to. There is plenty of good stuff to watch on TV, you don't have to be a mindless slave to it.
ReplyDeletei didn't grow up with a tv and my sister and i read a ton. every time i would go to my cousin's house i would sit in front of the time almost the whole time, i'ld get a headache when going home. my family did acquire a 5 inch b & w when i was 14(i watched the first episodes of 90210 on it), then we got a 13 b & w, then we got a 19 inch color and a VCR. we never got cable though. my parents had grown up without it as well. i think growing up without one in my younger days was good, but when you're older you are more able to ignore those commercials(i.e. realize that you aren't going to necessarily get hot chicks by drinking a certain beer). kids are very trusting.
ReplyDeleteIt's like those mini bagels were made for a laptop lunchbox :)
ReplyDeleteSo off topic :-)
ReplyDeleteAlmost everything I watch on tv, I have recorded, and use the handy skip commercials button when viewing. There is entertaining stuff out there - Stargate SG-1, Gilmore Girls, Without A Trace, Two and a Half Men (risque, but witty), Out of Practice (Stockard Channing), and Boston Legal (William Shatner does a superb job, I always knew he could act). Plus the British comedies on PBS, like As Time Goes By.
Now back to our regularly scheduled vegan programming...
i have a tv but rarely use it beyond watching movies and food network shows.. i'm always trying to veganize alton brown's recipes..
ReplyDeleteOh, everytime I'm over at my mom's I turn on the Food Network! I know I would be totally addicted to it if I ever had access to it here at home.
ReplyDeleteNo, Jennifer, it's in the wording--you didn't lie. You said "we don't have TV" not "we don't have a TV." Having TV means getting TV stations, and having *a* TV means having that black box. I always say we don't watch TV, even though we do keep a TV and a DVD/VCR player to watch movies. And we've been in Portland for 4 days now and the TV is still in the box, and no one has even thought about it. :-)
ReplyDeleteOur addiction comes out when we're staying in hotels. Then we watch TV until 1 or 2 in the morning. We'd *probably* regulate it if we had in in-house....wouldn't we??? We do always howl at the commercials. Ah, THIS is why we don't watch TV! we congratulate ourselves.
spongebob is hawking spinach, too (as well as some junk)
