Soup & Crackers

Our little thermos is getting quite a workout in this cold weather. Homemade tomato-basil soup, with crackers and vegan cheese, canned pears, and two fresh-baked chocolate cookies with oh-my-god vegan white chocolate chips (part of my recent shipment from Vegan Essentials...why yes, I do think white chocolate chips are essential, don't you?).
Verdict: About the cleanest-looking lunch box I've seen in a while. He didn't even leave any crackers behind. 5 stars.
P.S. Tomorrow is another noon release day -- no lunch box!

Those cookies look divine. What brand of "cheese" is that?

  2. Hi, miriam -- it's Tofutti brand American style cheese. That's the only vegan brand available right now in our area. I'm still waiting for the Vegan Cheese Renaissance to arrive, bringing dozens of vegan cheese choices to our stores. It will happen!

    Hi there Jennifer,
This is kinda' off topic, but I was wondering if you gave your shmoo any extra vitamins when he was a baby??My own little shmoo is being raised vegan and I worry about iron. She won't take the liquid vitamin (it's pretty icky),and she can't chew the 'chewables' yet.
    Thanks,
I LOVE your lunches.I'm storing up inspiration!

Angel, is that the Polyvisol? We used to put very small amounts in the girls' bottles (I'm a nanny for vegetarian twins). It probably wasn't the full recommended amount, but it's better than nothing, and definitely too gross to take on its own.

    Looks gorgeous, especially those cookies!!

  5. Hi, angel! We weren't vegan at that point, but I did give him liquid vitamin drops as a baby (don't know what brand they were but I do remember they were fruit flavored and he didn't seem to mind them). Now he takes a chewable each day -- VegLife vegan kids multiple -- and an occasional calcium chew.

  8. That's nothing! The public elementary school here combined "conferences" and the Thanksgiving holiday and gave the kids TEN DAYS off for Thanksgiving!! I don't remember having so many early release and days off when I was in school.

  9. I absolutely LOVE this blog. It is such a relief to hear about a kid actually choosing veganism for once rather than having it forced on him by fanatical parents.

I am so, so, so proud of your son.

    Keep up the wonderful work!

Hi Jennifer. I read your blog every day. I drool over it at work. :)

That soup sounds amazing! Any chance of you posting the recipe?

    Thanks!
    :)

  11. Hi Jennifer!

I love the white chocolate chips too. You are lucky to be able to order them and pay just shipping. With Cdn exchange and customs, it is unfortunately a bit prohibitive for us to buy from places like Vegan Essentials. :(

If anyone knows of a Canadian equivalent, please tell me about it!

True, long holidays, but the little varmits start school earlier in the fall and stay in school later in the spring than we did. They hardly have a summer.

Just out of curiosity, how long have you been vegan?

  15. Like Dreena, I'm in Canada and mail order is just too expensive. I too would be interested in knowing if there is a Canadian equivalent. Sometimes our selection leaves a bit to be desired and I can't drive across the border weekly to shop.
Jennifer, as always, another great lunch. Please include the flautas in the cookbook!! They look tasty!
