Welcome to the Little Shmoo's Top Five Countdown. Only six lunch days left until school is out, and I thought it would be fun to revisit shmoo's very favorite lunches. This weekend I asked him which lunches he thought were the very best and wrote them down as he said them, with the first one coming in at Number One.
We'll start the list with Number 5: flautas. I first packed these fried corn tortillas filled with beans on December 8th, and then again (with recipe!) on March 16th. Both times they were an enormous success, with repeated requests for more flautas from shmoo and his dad at dinnertime.
Along with flautas and a small container of salsa I packed a pear, blanched broccoli, and half a Thinkorganic! Cherry Nut bar.
Verdict: Only broccoli stems were left in the lunch box. 5 stars for Number 5.
aw, I'm sad that it's so close to the end! I just loved seeing what goes into these yummy lunches every day!
ReplyDeleteWhat are your plans for the summer, Jennifer?
Only one more week is too soon! (And not just because I'm still in school for another three weeks.) This is my favorite website. To echo the other posts, assuming Shmoo doesn't need a packed lunch each day, I will miss this over the summer and, yes, the long weekend was hard! I'm curious to see what Shmoo's no. 1 pick is!
ReplyDeleteGreat lunch and I like the countdown idea. I can't wait to see what #1 is!
ReplyDeleteNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
ReplyDeleteCan you maybe pack a LOT of picnics over the summer?
Me too! (Lurky, that is.) I've got you on my Google Reader feed. I love seeing what you come up with!
ReplyDeleteYes, what am I going to do this summer without my daily dose of schmoo food?! As I've mentioned before - your posts inspire me to eat less chicken & seafood & much more veggie......an overall healthier lifestyle. Thanks again! Your photos remind me of fun lunches my mom would make for me as a kid tucked with little home made notes...
ReplyDelete>>Quick question: are the tortillas just regular ones as the store? If so, what brand?
ReplyDeleteActually, I get them fresh at a local tortilla bakery. It's fun, you can watch them going down the assembly line. They are extra-small for flautas/taquitos, around 4 inches diameter. You might be able to find extra-small tortillas at the grocery store or make them with regular corn tortillas.
>>Also, I remember you mentioning that shmoo will be going to a different school next year. Have you decided which school?
Right now we're leaning heavily towards homeschooling, but we'll see how it goes over the summer.
>>Can you maybe pack a LOT of picnics over the summer?
I will definitely do a few picnics over the summer! In fact, I just got a spiffy new lunch container just for our summer picnics. :-)
There was a big debate last time over whether these were flautas or taquitos. Some people consider the two terms interchangeable, some consider these to be flautas, others taquitos. The recipe I read describing how to make these (using corn tortillas) described them as flautas, saying taquitos were thinner, tighter, and had less filling. Oh well, either way they taste great!
ReplyDeletemmmmmmmmmmmmm yummy, i love your cooking, you're like my vegan-cuisiniere role model hehe =) oh and, as a mexican girl, i must say that the difference between taquitos and flautas is the fryed corn tortilla. Fried ones are flautas, if it isn't fried it's more likely a taquito. Anyways, both of them taste reeeeeally good mmmmm delcius =D Greatings and congratulations for having a very nice blog !!
ReplyDeleteOhh a Top 5!
ReplyDeleteThis makes the next days fun fun fun :)
I'll def be back tomorrow
Teddy
ack! Only 6 lunches left!!! Now what will we do?
ReplyDeleteHomeschool is good, I was homeschool for as long as possible! For me that was til 4th grade, but only because my mom had to go to work. I LOVED IT!
But Flauta is a cooler name. So that wins right there, no?
ReplyDeleteOh, and I, too, will be sad not to see new lunches every day. But since I only started viewing your blog in March, I figure I can go back over the archives, two a day, and that will get me through the summer! Whatever will we do if you homeschool?!?!?! I guess you have to consider the well-being of your child over the readers of your blog, but oh how I hope to see more beautiful lunches!
ReplyDeleteoh no, there's no reason to pack a lunchbox for a homeschooled boy! i suppose schmoo's welfare should come before vegan lunch box, but STILL! my daughter, who's been homeschooled for middle school, is heading off to high school in the fall, and the thing she is most excited about is her new laptop lunch box (she's a huge fan of your blog and a near-vegan, just like her mom).
ReplyDeleteAbout the home school. You're in Washington, right? Check out www.connectionsacademy.com . It's a virtual school. They send you all the books and curriculum. You have contact with a teacher every two weeks. They still have field trips, etc. We did it this year and LOVED it. We are already signed up for next year to continue.
ReplyDeleteBack on topic. I have really enjoyed your little project here. I check it daily. You have helped show me how easy it is to be vegan and helped in the final push to go vegan as well as my whole family!
Thanks and YOU ROCK!
Top 5 countdown is a great idea. These "Flutes" as we call them, are very popular in my house also. I soften my tortillas in the microwave - wrapped in a damp paper towel in piles of five.
ReplyDeleteHey, you're considering homeschooling! That's great and if you decide that's what you're going to do, I'm sure little Shmoo would really enjoy it, and you'd be doing so many fun stuff together.
ReplyDeleteThis top 5 is really a cool idea! And a vegan homeschool blog won't be too bad:)
I cant wait for number 1...
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited you're thinking of homeschooling! I was a homeschooler my last year of high school, and I learned way more and had much more fun. Homeschooling made me actually interested in learning, which most school kids just aren't. Even though I've now graduated college I'm always still teaching myself "classes" -- astronomy, literature, botany, anything else I'm interested in! I only wish I'd been homeschooled my whole life instead of wasting time in school.
ReplyDeleteI hope you decide to homeschool Shmoo, although if you do I will definitely miss your lunch boxes!
