Little Shmoo's Top Five Countdown #3

Yes, it's the return of zaru soba coming in at number 3 on our countdown (ooh, I feel like a Lunch Box DJ!).

Zaru soba are chilled Japanese buckwheat noodles topped with a sprinkle of nori and served with a flavorful dipping sauce. This time they are appearing without their traditional sidekick, daikon radish, which shmoo didn't care for. But I did pack some edamame and one of my favorite fruit combos: fresh kiwi fruit mixed with fresh blueberries.

Verdict: I found just a few edamame and a broken pencil in the lunch box today. Shmoo was very happy with his soba. With his pencil, apparently not so much. 5 stars for Number 3.

That is my favorite fruit combo too, and it's such a nice colorful combo. This would be on my top 5 too!

ah ha! I knew the Zaru soba would be in the top five!

And any fruit combo that has berries in it is a big hit with me.

I just bought some soba noodles so I could make this! I forgot to buy the nori though - I'll have to run out and get some tomorrow.

I wonder if the twinkie dog will make a reappearance...

Jennifer, I am so impressed by Shmoo's choices for *his* favorite lunches out of all of your lunchbox creations. These three have been chock full of veggies and very healthy items.

Most kids would turn up their noses to noodles sprinkled with seaweed, but not your shmoo! Too fabulous. :)

My daughter is a paste & seaweed fan. This would be her top. I'm sure it will also be her frequent lunch when she starts kindergarten in the fall. I'll be checking you out for lots of inspiration. If only my daughter was as adventurous and open as your son. Was he a picky eater when he was younger?

Hmmmm... now that the fondue and the Zaru Soba are down, I can only thinkof the injera as a possible number 1. Although, personally, I want a recipe for the mini-wellington.

they suggest using a paring knife, but i've found that an oval shaped cookie cutter works just fine.

i'd also like to add my thanks to jennifer for sharing shmoo's meals via the web. you've been a such an inspiration to this vegan foodie! really looking forward to adding your cookbook to my collection :)

I am putting in my guess now that Little Schmoo's #1 will be the can't-go-wrong standby, "Macaroni & Peas." Do I win an extra week of Vegan Lunch Box posting if I'm right? That would be nice! I will miss checking out this website every day come summer.

I love the kiwi and blueberry combo: I have to admit I have never had the two at the same time.

And cold buckweat noodles is alwasys my lunch box item when I go bento.

Lol broken pencil, I love that. Just leave the origin of that to the imagination.

i love looking at all those lunches!! i have a very picky eater (he's only 2 though) and i hope to one day make his lunch just as healthy and fun as you do.
i hope you print all these out and keep for him to look at one day. he'll know just how loved he is.

ever since you first posted the zaru soba lunchbox, it has been a standard meal in my house...we sprinkle toasted sesame seeds on top, and add in some steamed spinach in addition to the nori. maybe not traditional, but very tasty none the less. thanks for introducing me to this great dish!

My 3 year old likes edamame but I wish I could get the 9 year old to eat them, or beans, for that matter.

Cont me among another who will miss your posts over the summer. I never thought of blueberries and kiwi together, but it sure does sound yummy! I’m thinking blueberry-kiwi soygurt concoction. That would be good, maybe with a hint of OJ. Anyway, waiting with bated breath for # 2 & 1.

We like to roll the soba into nori for a twist on shushi rolls. Kid friendly things to stuff them with? Yam fries, raw carrot strands, string beans, bbq tofu or tempeh, corn or baby corn, a sugarsnap pea. Just some ideas.

I adore your blog. I check it out when I need a pick-me-up. We homeschool, but I still love the lunch packs.
