Sushi for Two

Look at what Santa brought me for Christmas! It's my very own grown-up Laptop Lunch Date with gorgeous Bento Bag (and a water bottle and thermos, too!). Now when I eat lunch with Little shmoo I'll be packing my own food instead of stealing all of his! Today I made a cucumber roll for myself and some inari sushi for shmoo, with edamame, green grapes, and Botan rice candy for both of us. My little container has the soy sauce and his has the pickled ginger. I packed my lunch into the stylish bag, tucked the chopsticks in the side pocket, and then...
...off I went to my high-paid executive office job...er, I mean, to teach seven-year-olds the "ay" sound.
Verdict: We were just too cool today. Sushi with chopsticks was the envy of the entire class. 5 stars. (Thank you so much, Tammy & Amy!)

Super-cool that you have one too. I always wondered why you didn't have your own, but then again, Shmoo's food is worth stealing! I want this lunch for my dinner RIGHT NOW.

  5. Wow, you're very observant! Yep, I have a backup for the times he forgets some or all of his lunch containers at school.

  6. Does Shmoo use chopsticks, or does he eat the sushi with his hands?

  7. Aren't you just adorable! Shmoo is so lucky to have such a cool mom! And your sushi rolls look so professional. I'm still trying to figure out how to make them so they're not all falling apart. :P My favorite rolls are avocado and radish sprout rolls, and I always end up with the avocado squooshing out of the end!

How cool do you look?! I may have to request that bento bag for my birthday...it looks so stylish! I love packing sushi and edamame for lunch! I even got some bento sized chopsticks from Ebay for me and my daughter to use. They fit right in the outer container.

  9. Gasp! Must...have...bento sized chopsticks!

Shmoo is working on using chopsticks and is getting better all the time, but usually picks up the sushi with his fingers. I was taught that either way is acceptable, sushi etiquette-wise.

  12. Looks too good! Yum! I visit your blog daily, and I have become REALLY inspired.

I placed my first order of Laptop Lunch items to sell at my store and online and should receive it by Monday. I'll have the items for sale on my webstore sometime early next week. I did not order any of the Bento Bags to sell yet, though. Was waiting to introduce them around Earth Day (or April.) If everything sells well, I will bring them in even sooner. Can't wait -- they are pretty cool! Thanks much for sharing your ideas!

Shelly, try using avocado that's slightly less ripe to prevent it from squishing out the ends. It's a bit fussy, but I'd say sushi-ripe is about 2 days less ripe than guacamole-ripe.

You do need to somehow get in the royalty mix at the LapTopLunches.

  19. Try the Fuerte or Bacon avocadoes for your sushi. They are much more firm even when ripe and are perfect for avocado (sushi) rolls. The Haas avocado is the "guacamole" variety and when ripe, it mushes when you roll. --Michelle

Yay! I ordered a few laptop sets for the kids & one "lunchdate" set for my husband. When Amy asked how I had heard of them, I mentioned your blog ofcourse & said that they should totally send you a "lunchdate", too! I have yet to use ours now that school has started, but am inspired by what you have done for your son. Thank you! ~mom to 5 in VA

  27. My aunt taught me how to make inari (I grew up eating her inari and sushi rolls). The recipe is in the forthcoming cookbook...
