The Vegan Lunch Box Contest

Hot, hot, hot off the press! A box filled with copies of Vegan Lunch Boxjust arrived at my door, fresh from the publisher. My first thought was, "Wow, it really happened! It's a Real Book again!" My second thought was, "Let's give them away!" So, here I am to announce

THE VEGAN LUNCH BOX CONTEST!

Here's what you do:

Pack a lunch, take a picture, and email it to me along with your name, mailing address, and a description of whatcha got in there. The top five lunch boxes will be featured here on the blog, and the five winners will receive a free autographed copy of Vegan Lunch Box!

The lunches can be packed in any container, lunch box, or bag you like, but all the foods must be vegan (i.e. no meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, eggs, honey, or bugstuff). Points will be given for nutritional balance, creativity, and attractiveness.

Entries must be received by August 25th. The winners will be notified via email on September 1st, and their lunches will be featured here on the blog throughout the month of September.

Good luck! I can't wait to see all of your vegan lunch boxes!

Would you mail a copy to Canada? Is the contest open to all in North America?

Sure! I think everyone should have a chance to win. I'll even ship to Europe and Australia!

What's 'bugstuff'?

:)

Many food dyes are made from "bugstuff" (insects). I'm sure there are other things too...

I'm coming up to WA next month sometime between the 4th and 11th! We'll have to get together and chow down!

Oh boy! I knew my habit of taking photos of my lunch would come in handy someday. I'll have to look over and decide which one to send. Will mediocre photo quality be factored into the score? I usually take the picture with my cameraphone, which isn't great.

How exciting! May we create multiple entries? I have too many ideas already!

Cool, Zach! Let me know if you need a place to stay. :-)

My cousin has it right -- when I said "bugstuff" I was referring to things like honey, cochineal / carmine (a red food dye made from bugs) and shellac / confectioner's glaze, which is made from the secretion of the lac insect and is often used to give candy a shiny coating.

There are many of these "hidden" animal ingredients in processed foods, so it's tricky. Although small amounts of obscure ingredients that may come from bugs, wool, etc., are not an issue in my own personal day-to-day choices, I do try to make sure everything pictured on the blog is 100% vegan, so my blog can best serve the entire vegan community as a whole. I just would hate to see an adorable lunch creation and not be able to use it because some little trace ingredient wasn't vegan.

Not as long as I can tell what I'm looking at. :-)

>>May we create multiple entries?

Sure, why not? But you can only win once!

Do the lunches need to be kid friendly? I have a great idea that a child would probably make a face at.

I am THRILLED to announce that my 7-year-old Cole has already begun creating his own entries. :) (Yes...entries as in several... --he announced that he will make one a day until the contest is over.)

Cool, Deirdre!! I can't wait to see his creations. :-)

>>Do the lunches need to be kid friendly?

No, they can be any lunch you like to eat, whatever age you are. :-)

Ooh great idea for a competition! Good luck everyone :)

My preordered Vegan Lunch Box arrived this week from Amazon and I am loving the new layout! Well done on your 2nd edition!

And the full meal muffins, you must be a mind reader, my 21 month old is going through an only eating bread products phase, I had planned to look for some muffin recipes this weekend and the book fell open on that page, these will be ideal for her, along with the banana oatmeal cookies hopefully :)

Thank you!!

Oh fun! I've really enjoyed looking at all your lunches over the years. And it's summer holidays so I can photograph a picnic lunch (I don't need pack lunches for work at the moment). :-)

Am I missing something here about the Oreos? Since Oreos are a trademark, then asking Nabisco if these are Vegan is a joke..Not only are these cookies crap, they are NOT vegan..refined sugar is not vegan and anyone who says they live life 100 percent vegan and uses refined sugar products needs to do some more research..as in, bone chard..

Fun! I sent an e-mail.

vegan4life, it's "bone char", not to be confused with swiss chard, the vegetable. If you're going to nag other people about their personal choices you could at least spell things right...but that's just me I guess...
