The Goodbyn

There's another new entry in the kid-friendly lunchbox market. This one's called the Goodbyn, and features built-in compartments with no lids or removable containers to keep track of, an 8-ounce bottle with its own compartment, built-in handle, and best of all, stickers.

I think it's a bit goofy to look at, but still cute. From the photographs and description, it looks like it can hold quite a lot of food -- even a whole banana. Thoughts?

(Thank you Michelle for the link!)

I think it looks adorable & practical....something my daughter would love. I wish there were some reviews from people who actually own them & have used them out there, I hate to spend the money for both of my kids without reading anything :) I'll be watching, that's for the heads up!!

That sounds great! I think I might grab one for myself since it seems to hold so much! :)

you know, it's cute and seems like a good idea, but it doesn't look like it'd easily fit in an insulated bag (maybe i'm wrong, i didn't check the dimensions).

I think it looks really cute for kiddos. I does look pretty BIG though, in the shots on the "transporting" page.

Way too big for my little guy -- the dimensions are 13 x 8.5 x 3.2 inches. It is cute, but right now it's bigger than his backpack! Maybe in a few more years if the reviews end up being good we'll look into getting one for him.

Goodness, that's enormous!
It's very cute, but it seems to me that by the time the child is old enough to eat that much food, he will want something more serious.

i applaud the company, and i'm so happy that they're from seattle (so are we). That said, while it is cute, and a great way to help green up lunches, i would like to know about the plastic. BPA? PVC? lead? leaching? also, it kind of looks like a pain to wash w/all those crevices. i'll stick w/my laptop so i can just switch out the containers.

My son is starting preschool this year, and the school says he needs a lunchbox he can open himself. Would this one work? And do you think a 4 year old can open all the components of a laptop? Or any other recommendations?

the website says that it is BPA and Phthalate free and that you can put it in the dishwasher.

I'm going to have to give this the thumbs down. That GIANT lid seems like a big downside, if you pack it with any compartment filled with messy substances like they show (yogurt) then you have a GIANT messy lid laying around. Seems annoying to clean (do you run your dishwasher every night? I don't. Maybe that's just me.) And I see parents still packing (or kids insisting on) things that don't fit in it (large apple, oddly shaped food) so where do you put that stuff? In a separate lunchbox? Tie it to the Goodbyn with twine? Put it ALL into an even larger lunchbag? One more thing.....EW warm yogurt!

I agree, my biggest concern would be how to keep it cold. It doesn't seem to come with an insulated carrying case, and the pictures all depict the Goodbyn sitting out on shelves with no refrigeration.

I think it could be really useful, especially if it isn't the only lunch container you have. I really want to try one, but the $30 pricetag is a little rich for my blood :\

Hi Jenna and Jennifer,
why not freeze the liquid in the bottle?
It will be unfrozen but still cold when needed and keeps all the other stuff in the bin cold, too.
Was the first thing that came to my mind, since that works fine for bigger boxes on festivals, picknicks ...not to use the thermal pack, but frozen drinkpacks instead.

Aww i think its cute. I wonder though how you could keep that cold though.

I think the price is comparable to Tupperware - and those new extra small kids bananas fit in just about anything... i think it's cute - but Tupperware as is this - is too much money for me.

I just bought one but haven't received it yet. I'll write a review when i get it. The company states if you freeze the bottle it will keep the foods cold. Also, the lid is designed to keep the foods from leaking into the other sections - I would not worry about yogurt spilling over. I chose to buy the Goodbyn over the Laptop because I don't like all those individual lids - I would lose them I'm sure. And I do run my dishwasher every night so cleaning this would be no trouble.

i saw one of these in a store here in atlanta, and it was HUGE. i would never make my poor little elemnetary student lug this thing around. plus, it smelled very plasticky. maybe i'm overly cautious when it comes to plastic, but it was very, very plasticky....

My kids are 7 and 10. They love these lunchboxes. My kids are really into recycling and protecting the environment, so they love it that they are eco-friendly. The only problem we had is that the water bottles tend to come open on the top and leak.

I like the Goodbyn because it is big enough for lunch plus 2 snacks. I bought it this year because I'm getting into Bento, portion control, natural foods, sustainability, and making lunchtime more fun (i.e. DON'T WORK THROUGH LUNCH!). I bought charcoal gray because I thought it would look more "grown up" but it's pretty ugly, even with stickers. I should have gotten a fun color. My problem is needing an insulated sleeve to keep the food hot or cold. I'm still looking for one but I may end up having to sew my own since it's such a strange shape and size. The handle is, well, pretty handy!

They have a smaller sized goodbyn lunch kit for preschoolers. http://goodbyngirls.blogspot.com/2011/02/this-just-in.html

I have those for my kids. I've discovered it's not "cool" to have one in high school. My elem school kids love theirs. They told me their food stays cold. What I do is pack it the night before and put it in the fridge over night and it stays cold for them. With the compartments separated, it works well.

As for apples...I solved the problem by buying a smaller sized apples and even bananas too. I also found that it holds the thick yogurt just fine but not the applesauce. Also had no issues with leaking to other sections as long it's not soup or anything liquidy. What I love about it is not looking for extra lids like I did with tupperware which drove me insane. It's like 5 tupperware "glued" together to fit as one and has only one lid.
