No school today! The shmoo and I will be heading out to play with friends this afternoon, something we haven't got to do much since he started school.
Here's the recipe for my Lunch Box Fondue. We sure loved it. Even my uncheese-hating husband was surprised when he tasted it; he sat up and said, "How did you do this? It actually tastes good!" Surprise!
Let me know what you think, and if you have any other fondue dippers to add to my list. Thanks!

Excellent! I had been hoping you would post the fondue recipe.
What are nutitional yeast flakes? I don't think I've ever seen those - brand name? where are they in a store, in a refrig case? Thanks.
Karen Anne, I've always bought nutritional yeast in the bulk section of health food stores. It looks like yellow mashed potato flakes and should be labeled "nutritional yeast." It gives a cheesy flavor. I make macaroni & cheese and nacho cheese with this. Nutritional yeast is also good in gravy.
salad suggestion!
my fiance and i made a TERRIFIC portabello/avocado salad for lunch today, and i thought you might want to try it for little shmoo. or at least for yourself, if you are into portabellos and avocado.
we used lettuce, baby spinach, julienne-cut carrots, and alfalfa sprouts. then we cut up an avocado and threw that in. then we added some sauteed portabello mushrooms and tossed the bugger, along with some annie's naturals brand shiitake and sesame dressing.
oh, and also, we tore some artisan garlic bread into little hunks (we don't like little square croutons, we like something we can bite into) and baked them into large, delicious croutons, and added those in as well.
it's quite good, and filling besides, thanks to the avocado, shrooms, and bread. don't know if you guys would like it, but as i was eating it, i thought of you and figured you might be able to tweak it to your taste. =)
OMgosh I just made the fondue and it is great! Shmoo is one lucky dude!
I had it over brown rice with steamed string beans and other veggies I had roasted
I just made this and it is soooo soooo good!
YAY! Thank you, mouse and michelleknits!!
And thank you, pickamuffin, for the salad recipe. My husband *loves* portabellos.
Hi Jennifer. This may not be the "place to ask" but even though Lil Shmoo has the best lunches so why would he even want to try anyone elses, but does he know differences in vegan/non-veg foods? What about the other school-kids, do they ask or offer him foods? And the teacher, she must love his lunches! I am always curious to know about vegan children during lunchtime at school. Thanks! PS... I am going to try this recipe very very soon. mmm.
Hi, leslie! Yes, he knows the difference, and he knows where foods come from (I think a lot of kids his age don't). He's still fuzzy on cheese things (crackers, dips) and most baked goods containing dairy, so I'm taking it slow and educating him bit by bit without making a big fuss over things. He knows that the other kids eat meat and he and one other girl are the only vegetarians.
As far as the other kids, I think they sometimes ask what he's eating, but they have a "no sharing food" rule in the classroom. He said he told them he doesn't eat animal meat and neither should they (I told him in the future that might be too blunt an approach! lol). His teacher did ask me where I got the cool lunch box. :-)
Hi, jennifershmoo, when about is your cookbook coming out? Thanks...
I am soo looking forward to trying that Lunchbox fondue! I love love LOVED the Polenta fries (my family wasn't so hot for them but oh well...MORE FOR ME!) Anyhoo, I'm off to get some nutritional yeast!
Is Brewer's Yeast the same as Nutritional Yeast?
I just wanted you to know I am so stealing your ideas and passing them off to dd as my own brilliance. Thanks!
Hi, dee! No, nutritional yeast is different than brewer's yeast, although I have been in small health food stores that label them both as brewer's yeast. Brewer's yeast is a byproduct of the brewing industry. Nutritional yeast is grown especially for human consumption and has a pleasing, nutty-cheesy taste. Red Star is a very popular brand; the "vegetarian support" formula is also enriched with B12.
Re. the timing on the cookbook, I'm still writing it so it will be a while. I will let everyone know when I have a better idea of the timeline.
Thanks for explaining that Jennifer. I agree that most children his age don't know what they are eating. I did at that age and cried at almost every meal but my family all ate meat. It was hard for me to be convincing at such a young age. I admire your parenting and if I am ever a parent, at least based on just what I see here, I hope to be just like you. I at least daydream about it.
I can't find the fondue recipe. Did I miss it? Is it gone now?
I use Jo Stepaniak's recipes for cheezy sauces. I would have liked a peek at yours to compare.
Yay! Thanks for putting the fondue recipe back up, Jennifer! I can't wait to try it!
