Kitty Cat & Mr. Fish

Could it be? Why, yes! It's...a peanut butter & grape jelly sandwich! Can you believe it? This pb&j is a little kitty cat and with him is his friend Mr. Fish (fish are friends, not food!). I also packed half a banana, jicama & carrot sticks with vegan ranch dressing, and two chocolate chip cookies. Beverage: Raspberry Silk Alive yogurt drink.
Verdict: A classic lunch box. He ate everything but..."I hate banana," he told me. "Oh. But you eat them at home, don't you?" "I hate them at school." Allllrighty, then. 3 stars.

thanks so much for this blog! I've been inspired to try some of your lunch suggestions for myself. Why should kids have all the fun? :-)

these just keep getting cuter and cuter. Now I NEED to get this lunchbox so I can bring some of these lunches with me where I go! :D

Oh, what cute sandwiches! I used to use cookie cutters to make holiday themed sandwiches for my kids...then they told me I was a geek. :sigh: No more cookie cutter sandwiches.

BTW...what is jicama like? I've heard of it before, but never tried it.

Great blog! I'm deathly allergic to PB, bummer.
I also can't have carrots, apples, celery, tofu, most nuts, peas and limit dairy and wheat.

Let me know if you think of anything. :)

Hi, Shelly! Jicama is crunchy and sweet and tastes something like water chestnuts or potato. Buy the smallest ones you can find -- the smaller the sweeter.

Hi, Denise! You said no tofu, does that mean no soy at all? I see some lunches here that you could have, especially if you substituted other veggies and fruits for the carrot sticks, peas, and apples. For example, sushi rolls, tomato or black bean soup with rice crackers or corn chips, rice pudding, and oat pancakes with jam or syrup.

I know someone else already suggested this, but you should definately make a book or something with recipes and pictures, or maybe even a guide to raising vegan kids? You could call it "The Shmoo Handbook" or "Being a Shmoo" ^^

I love your titles, bojangles! Especially "The Shmoo Handbook". Subtitled "Your Guide to the Fabulous Shmoo Lifestyle"...hee hee. Or "Zen and the Art of Shmoo". "Shmooing and Nothingness". HA!

Seriously, thank you!

Oat pancakes?! OOOOH, want to try!

Thanks, Denise. I'm working on writing my recipes down. More news as it happens...

I love your blog. We are a vegan family, and I just was delighted to find the fun things you are doing here :) I just had to link to you!

He might find the banana too strong-smelling when it's cut in half -- I'm particular about how I'll eat bananas (no brown spots, either) and I find a lot of it is the smell.

Yum, chocolate chip cookies.

COOL!

Believe it or not...I hate bananas, too...the ONLY fruit I don't like.

Question: What is/are jicama? Answer on my blog if you can...http://harmonious.blogdrive.com

Harmonia said...

Oh! Nevermind, I see someone in comments had the same question, but I would still love it if you visited my blog :)

I'm going to agree. Desperately envious about the Kitty and Fish molds. Love the lunches. I have been so inspired by your dedication to Shmoo's Healthy Lunch. I loved the gingerbread for lunch idea, as well as the sushi; it never would have occured to me.

By the way, the Horchata Rice Drink is offically My Favorite Vegan Product. I bought some Saturday, and we shamefully polished it off with breakfast Sunday morning. And as my Hispanic, non-vegan partner claimed that it is better than her mom's horchata, well, that's just good horchata.

Do write a cookbook. We can all help you come up with names. How about "The care and feeding of Shmoos: Raising hilarious vegan kids."

Love your ideas. Those lunches are too cute. I hate bananas too, except on special occasions. I really want to like them but they are slimy and they make me gag. I like them in bread.

Those have to be the cutest sandwiches I've ever seen!

I tried to comment ages ago, but I needed a blogger identitiy then...just realised I don't now! I love to read about, and see, everything you've made. I always promise myself I will make as good lunches for myself, but never do :S
Still, love the inspiration, even if I can't put in the effort!

It seems slightly strange to me that you're a vegan, but you cut your sandwiches into animal shapes...hmm. ;)

Love the blog, though!
